Michael

Michael* entered the foster care system when he was just 5; he aged out of the system last year when he turned 18. While in care, Michael's placement changed several times. The constant turmoil was impacting him in many ways, including scholastically.
When Michael was 15, he became a part of Genesis Hopeful Haven, an organization that works to prepare youth to successfully transition from the foster care system to a purpose-driven adulthood by providing a haven that promotes hope, healing, and independence. This organization, with its dedicated staff, provided the stability and support Michael craved. Aside from their incredible team, Michael found consistent support through the Voices For Children team. These relationships proved to be life-altering for Michael.
Through the support of Voices For Children supporters, Michael has been able to have experiences that may not have otherwise transpired. Last year, Michael went on our annual B.L.U.E. Missions service trip to the Dominican Republic, where he was part of a team that helped build latrines for an underserved community. Earlier this year, he participated in a panel at an annual child welfare conference, discussing his experiences in care and ways the system can improve. Through our Children's Needs programs, we purchased Michael's junior class ring, celebrating his hard work and dedication - his grades had vastly improved.
Michael is now working in real estate. He is determined to become a real estate agent and build his own company.
Michael's life could have been very different. Sadly, statistics don't favor youth that age out of the system, but thanks to the dedicated adults and experiences afforded to Michael, we know he'll be a success story.
