Back to School in Style

With many school-aged kids tense with nerves at the thought of a new school year, Style Saves Foundation helped make the transition back to the classroom just a little easier. The weekend before Miami-Dade County’s first day of classes, the local organization hosted the fifth annual Back-to-School In-Style event at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, in partnership for the first time with Voices For Children Foundation and Plaza Construction, which also contributed to the event. “There is still so much need, “said Nelson F. Hincapie, President and CEO of Voices For Children Foundation, following the organization’s back-to-school event held at Old Navy the previous week. “We’re happy and fortunate to be able to give the children yet another opportunity to feel empowered and excited to go back to school.”

The morning of, the air filled with enthusiasm and the children and their guardians lined up early to be the first inside the event, also attended by Miami-Dade County Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez. Once inside, children had the opportunity to pick out free clothes and accessories for the upcoming school year. Community volunteers rallied from a range of organizations and name brands to man booths, greet children and provide a one-on-one experience that extended far beyond the tangible.

Kids were treated to face painting and showed off their new fashions during a mini runway show, among other organized activities. “We wanted to give these kids the opportunity to strive,” said Rachael Russell, President of Style Saves, of the program created to keep the children engaged and excited. Based on the smiles on everyone’s faces — from the volunteers who donated their time and goods, to the children whose lives were made better that afternoon — the road to success this school year is paved with generosity.

Voices For Children is more than just an organization, it's a beacon of hope... Voices is that hand to our future. I'm proof that there is hope.
